WHY TRAVEL?

“If our lives are dominated by a search for happiness, then perhaps few activities reveal as much about the dynamics of this quest — in all its ardour and paradoxes — than our travels. They express, however inarticulately, an understanding of what life might be about, outside the constraints of work and the struggle for survival. Yet rarely are they considered to present philosophical problems — that is, issues requiring thought beyond the practical. We are inundated with advice on where to travel; we hear little of why and how we should go — though the art of travel seems naturally to sustain a number of questions neither so simple nor so trivial and whose study might in modest ways contribute to an understanding of what the Greek philosophers beautifully termed eudaimonia or human flourishing.”

— from The Art of Travel by Alain de Botton

Did you know?

The Internet continues to become the medium of choice for travelers researching or planning a trip.

A new study conducted by Feedback Research, a division of California-based Claria Corporation indicates that 88 per cent of travelers in 2005 used or were planning to use the Internet to research their travel plans or actually to buy from suppliers online. Of the research group, 61 per cent had already purchased or were planning on purchasing airline tickets online.

Furthermore, 52 per cent had already bought or were planning on buying accommodation online. For purchasing airline tickets online, this represents an 11 per cent increase in one year, and for buying accommodation online a 12 per cent increase.

Why has Internet-based travel journalism become so important to the travel and tourism industry?

For an analysis of its impact on our industry, read Durant Imboden's article:

“People travel to wonder at the height of the mountains, at the huge waves of the seas, at the long course of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars, and yet they pass by themselves without wondering.”

— Saint Augustine
